Goals in Blogging

I'm just starting to tell people that I blog, and I know that for most people it's kind of something you raise your eyebrows at.

They might think:
Blog? I haven't written in it since 2007 but I have a blog too. Why does she bring it up?

Then they ask what is it for, at which point I explain that right now it's more of an online journal, with the aim of gaining a foothold online. Eyebrows go up even more.

Which basically tells me that I need a way to describe blogging without sounding crazy or undervaluing what it is.

What This Blog is About:
Right now is an online record of life in NYC and learning how to be married.

Why Do I Blog?
I enjoy the act of writing, and the community of those you can meet who also write online. I also wish to encourage others going through hardships with fertility.

What Do I Want This To Turn Into?
I hope that I will be doing some kind of online storefront in the future, when kids eventually make an appearance and I'm a stay-at-home mom. This blog is serving as a stepping stone into that.

So tell me.....
Have you ever vocalized why you blog to people, and they just didn't get it?
Any weird reactions?
How did you explain your intentions?

  1. "learning how to be married" -- I love this!

I haven't really verbalized why I blog to anyone except my husband and sis-in-law. And that was to say, "I couldn't shut my brain off, so I just poured it out online." Perhaps my reasons have changed. Now I just like interacting with people that I wouldn't otherwise meet (I don't spend much time on social media).

That's cool about the store front! What type of product do you think you might sell?

    1. I've worked as a real estate agent, sold editing gigs by Fivrr, and worked as an Amazon Turk. I have no idea yet what I'll do next, but I definitely know something entrepreneurial.

Friends are finding that my Instagram and Pinterest accounts have this blog verified, and are popping in. This is kind of my acknowledgement that I'm out as a 'blogger'.

  2. I agree! "Learning how to be married" is a great way to put it!

I initially started blogging to post some of my recipes friends would often request from me. But it was also a place to write about personal adventures (and not so adventurous things) and has now become my little spot for all of the above and some crafty endeavors.

    1. Learning how to be married.... an obvious statement. I'll always be learning I know :)

I started writing in a "Line-a-Day" journal, that we started on our wedding day. 11 months later, and we've only filled in three months(ish) total. Before it fizzled, I started documenting them online. Now it's basically anything I find worthy of saying or would want to remember.

  3. I agree!
I blogged initally because I was inspired by the movie Julie and Julia!

  4. I really like this post. I started slowly when I told people I was a blogger I told a couple of my close friends and that was it. Then I told one of my at the time not so close friends Natalie that I had blog and she was like me too! And we're now super close, she actually comment above me. So, when I need someone to nerd out to about blogging I go to her. The most confused response I got was from my mom who still to this day doesn't understand why I blog but I have gotten to the point where if they don't understand I don't stress I just explain best I can and let them ask questions if they have any. And when the questions get to me I write a post about it because to me blogging is my outlet. Sorry this is so long but its true.
    Have a great day,
    Emma.

    1. I welcome long comments- much better than then 'I have nothing to say here but hey, I did write something'. What is that all about? I don't think anyone I know really blogs, but would be cool to find out I'm wrong.

My mom doesn't understand text, so for those in that category I'm going to leave it alone unless I start earning money or it makes me famous lol.

  5. It is kind of odd to tell people that you're a blogger. Most people don't get it and/or they think you're some weirdo who cannot make "real life" friends lol Most of the response I've gotten after telling someone I'm a blogger has been positive, but it helps to have a business card to hand them to make it seem more legit!

    1. Business cards, who would've thought! I totally get that though, especially for those in a niche trying to get clients or gain influence. I'll see where this one takes me I guess!

  6. Thanks for this shared post and I enjoyed reading your introspection and thoughts. Early in my career I worked for a large regional newspaper in Philadelphia where I also wrote ongoing food columns, many of these feature stories. It was my favorite job. I also grew up in the food business, have cooked professionally and my degree is in agribusiness. Some people have eaten at my home and say things were among the best foods they ever tasted, and none of these ever give any credence to a blog. Still, technology is my biggest challenge. I would like to spend more time interviewing food related guests and featuring them. It is difficult in such a crowded market, but I do love my blog and look forward to developing further in the future. This is what I do now between dropping my grandson at the bus stop in the morning and picking him up each afternoon, it gives us great moments together too and he is quite a cook even at just eight years old! And by the way, both of my daughters are adopted from Korea, both arrived at 3 months of age (3 years apart) they are now 25 and 22, thought you might like to know that in your current journey. Best of Luck!

    1. :) Thanks for popping in Peggy! We're definitely pro-fostering/adoption, but praying over the next few years we can have a few naturally as well. I might be sending you a message about this further though.

And blogging in your case definitely is an escape, into amazing food and online connections, and growing closer with your grandson. So, I doubt anyone would question your motives behind blogging haha
