On Confidence and Green Acres

1. Share a favorite song, book, or movie title containing the word green?
So, Green Acres immediately came to mind.
Upon listening to the lyrics, I laughed at how exactly opposite this song is from my life.
Here, the husband drags the ritzy wife to the country. In my case, the exact opposite happened.
Husband:
Green acres is the place for me.
Farm livin' is the life for me.
Land spreadin' out so far and wide
Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside.

Wife:
New York is where I'd rather stay.
I get allergic smelling hay.
I just adore a penthouse view.
Dah-ling I love you but give me Park Avenue.

2. Ralph Waldo Emerson is quoted as saying, 'Shallow men believe in luck. Strong men believe in cause and effect.' Would you agree? Are you a believer in luck?
In certain things, silly things. We tend to stay away from that word since we believe that most things that happen to us were set in motion for our good by God's glory (and we don't want to take any importance away from that and give it to luck). But if we're playing a game and and you get a good hand, you're lucky. Or, if you drop a buttered piece of bread and it does that mid-air spin (in slow motion, of course) to land faceup on the plate.... you are lucky :)

3. Spring water, Hot Springs, handspring, spring fling, spring break, spring fever, offspring...which 'spring' word best applies to something in your day, week, or life right now?
Spring fever. I've gotten to the point where I am disappointed when I see that the temperatures are below 50. I've been spoiled.. just last month it was a heatwave it if got above 40. But I miss flowers most of all, anyone else with me there?
 4. What's something you do to make yourself look or feel more confident?
Put on some makeup or dress up a bit. Not something I grew up knowing how to do, but once I figured out that it was okay to take some pride in your appearance I realized that it's a definite confidence boost. Putting your best foot face forward and all.

5.  It's National Celery Month...are you a fan? If so, what's a snack or dish you enjoy that calls for celery?
I am a fan, and our favorite way to use them is for holidays and parties. Mix together cream cheese and Lipton Onion Soup Mix well, until it tastes right (you know, oniony). Spread onto 2 inch pieces of celery and munch. And, because it's celery, you can almost fool yourself into thinking they are a healthy alternative to chips and dip.

6. What's one thing you wish you'd learned sooner?
I guess to be confident in my choices. They may have been bad ones, but I used to second guess myself a lot and look to others for their input. Since college I've gotten past this, and am a pretty decisive person :)

7. Would you like to own a second home? If so where would you want that home to be?
Sure- one in the country with room for a cow, some chicken and room to garden. I would love to have a small homestead where I could live, and make this NYC apartment our second home, to visit family and host visitors.
8.  Insert your own random thought here.
My aunt arrived on Friday, right on schedule, but this morning I woke from a pregnancy test dream. No- I don't believe in dreams 'telling' me anything or as a message from God- but I do believe in my preoccupation with figuring out my cycle and when I ovulate. I woke for my early morning shift, logged onto Amazon and placed the order for some ovulation prediction strips. Hopefully I can figure this out!

So tell me...
Are you more like the husband or the wife in Green Acres?
Have you ever done a handspring? I don't think I've advanced past somersaults, despite gymnastics class.
Where would you build your second home?

  1. Wildly waving my hand to #3...so with you on being over winter. It is freezing here this morning. I remember Green Acres : ) I'm a little bit of both. I used to be able to do a handspring, but have not attempted one in years. Enjoy your day!

    1. Haha! I think most of the hodgepodge feels this way too!

  2. I am the wife in Green Acres...but we live in a place right now very much like it. My husband is the pastor of a church in a small town called Rock Mills. We both LOVE it. I can't imagine city life any more.

    1. Crazy where we end up in the end :) I sometimes have a hard time adjusting to country-speed when I visit family. Guess we're well adjusted!

  3. We're like the reverse story line...we live in a big city...I was raised in the country and my husband has always lived in cities. I hate the traffic...really really. Happy Hodgepodge!

    1. That's the same here. And I know I would as well, if I didn't have the subway or bus to get me where I need to go :)

  4. My husband and I both grew up in the country. Cities are nice to visit every once in a blue moon, but country life is the life for us. :)

    1. I understand that! I used to say that I would never ever move to NYC :)

  5. I started out a bit like the wife, but with the dreams of the husband. I grew up loving that show. I will still watch it anytime I can. We live on our own green acres and love every minute of it. My dream finally came true.

    1. I never really grew up watched Green Acres much, but my mother always had Little House on the Prairie and the Andy Griffith Show on. I think living on green acres is one of my favorite childhood memories though :) Congrats :)

  6. Farin, fun to read your thoughts. Loved your picture of the farmstead, but you would find those animals a lot of work to take care of. ;-) From Texas, many of the people who have moved here from the North go back North in May through September, returning to winter here. It seems to be very expensive to me. But if I had lots of funds to do it with, I'd like a home in Italy, in Tuscany.

    1. Italy does look beautiful, and so serene! I understand why you would go there.

I grew up on a dairy farm, where we sold milk and eggs. I would never want to be a farmer, but would love to have a few animals to bring rhythm and sustainability to our house. Our fictional one that is. Although I do think you are allowed to have chickens in the city, with a special permit of course :)

  7. I'm a suburban/urban gal who lived in somewhat rural Central Coast CA for 4 years and on a somewhat remote island for 2 years. I can relate to feeling itchy for busier life, but isn't it funny because now I want to go live in Amish country and grab simple back again. :) Or we also dream of living at a sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica. I really enjoyed reading your thoughts and continue to pray for those pregnancy results! Coming to you from Christian Women Bloggers Unite. Blessings!

    1. I did not expect someone to say 'sloth sanctuary' when I asked where you would build a second home. Thanks for the prayers and I guess we just always want a little variety in life :)

  8. I am definitely more like the hubby! Country living is more suited to me...and my husband, to be honest! Give me a home in the hills of East TN. and I'd be all set! Your photos are beautiful!

  9. AW! What a fun piece describing such interesting facts about you! I want that farmstead... oh that picture is amazing. And a place in the city too. The perfect balance!

    SPRING FEVER. Yes!!!

  10. Oh gosh, I appreciate the countryside and I love nature and going for hikes, but cities totally invigorate me! It's a tough call. I haven't had the chance to *live* in a city yet, but I would love to give it a try. I was spoiled with spring last week when I was in Seattle! It was gorgeous!

    1. I guess everyone wants a good balance of fast life and relaxation. Seattle was beautiful when we went (can't believe it was almost a year ago!). It was a little cold when we went last year in early May, funny that you had warmer temperatures in March!

  11. Green Acres...good stuff I always liked that show. I grew up in the middle of nowhere and quick as I could moved to the city. After having kids I wanted back in the middle of nowhere, except now I really miss the quick access to things. Why oh, why must I drive over an hour to get to the closest store for clothing? Or over an hour to find basketball shoes? Ugh!

    1. I remember growing up and taking a day trip to buy soccer cleats and shinguards, because there was only one store that sold them, 2 hours away. I would really miss having convenience stores, 24 hours drug stores, and access to anything by a train. But, I do have urges to move back to the country. Maybe we will in a few years :)
