All About Candy and Commercial Easter

1. This coming weekend is Palm Sunday, which marks the beginning of Holy Week. Do you celebrate Easter in your home? What was your favorite Easter tradition as a child?
As a child we didn't do much in terms of celebrating Resurrection Day, but I remember returning from church to look for my Easter basket. My parents decided that hiding the basket ensured more time spent preoccupied, and they often hid it very well. I remember dying Easter eggs and my mother would make homemade coconut, jelly and peanut butter "eggs". My mother used to sew my dresses and I remember some frilly ones during the Easter season.
2. George Weinberg is quoted as saying, 'Hope never abandons you, you abandon it.' Agree or disagree? Share your own thoughts on the word hope.
Um... I'm not sure how a feeling can abandon it's owner, but I do think you can either give up on it or just flat-our change your mind. Sounds like something a wise old man would say to encourage a teenager in a feel-good movie.

3. Weigh in with a yay or nay on the traditional Easter candies. A solid milk chocolate bunny? Cadbury Creme Eggs? Peeps? Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs? Jellybeans? Coconut Cream Eggs? Of the candies listed, which one would you most like to find in your Easter basket?
I do not like solid-chocolate anything, can only eat so many Peeps or jelly beans, but I love anything that is filled with peanut butter. Those, plus the Whoppers "Robin Eggs" always left me in a happy sugar coma as a kid.

I don't think I've ever really had a Cadbury Creme Egg, but remember the commercial well. We had recorded "The Wizard of Oz" on videotape during Easter one year, so ever 10 minutes you had a bunch of random animals in bunny ears trying to be the new Cadbury bunny. Since this was the movie I chose to watch on repeat growing up, this commercial is ingrained in my mind as much as those terrifying flying monkeys and the lollipop guild.

4. When did you last feel 'like a kid in a candy store'?
When Tom and I took my friend and her little girl to Dylan's Candy Bar. The entire place is modeled after Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, and just smells like sugar. I can't imagine any of the workers ever enjoying sugar after being in the place 8 hours a day, but you do get an instant contact sugar high when you walk in. They have some crazy decor, such as this lollipop sculpture:
5. What's something you know you do differently than most people? Does that bother you? Does it bother other people?
I was just reminded the other day how different I am from my husband, this time because of grocery shopping. I oftentimes get frustrated when we go to get items for a meal, and instead of having a plan to get in and out, he prefers to wander around until he decides what he likes to cook. That drives me insane, but I think that we've resolved to shop separately from now on :)
Farin: "List complete."
Tom: "Oh, ribs are on sale."
Very different shopping styles

6. Palm Springs CA, Palm Beach FL, or the PALMetto State...of the three mentioned, which sunny spot would you most like to visit right now? Which have you visited at one time or another?
I would take any of them at this point, but I guess I would prefer Palm Springs.

Maybe it's because I've been to Florida several times but California just once. That, or maybe since we've been toying with the idea of visiting the west coast again this year so it's on my mind already.

7. If you could change the length of a day would you lengthen it or shorten it? Tell us why.
Lengthen it. I'm guessing most people would agree, but only as long as our bodies wouldn't need even more sleep to function. What good would a 30 hour day be if we still needed 10 hours of sleep to function? Sounds good in theory but I'm sure we'd still get less than the recommended amount, be dragging ourselves, and crave an even longer day. Good thing we aren't in control of these things!

8. Insert your own random thought here.
Since the questions this week mostly all revolved around Easter (the commercial side anyway), my mind has switched over to Easter mode.  Growing up, we sang this song in church every year, in the weeks approaching Easter.

Ev'ry morning is Easter morning from now on!
Ev'ry day's resurrection day, the past is over and gone!

Good-bye guilt, good-bye fear, good riddance! Hello, Lord, Hello, sun!
I am one of the Easter People! My new life has begun!

Daily news is so bad it seems the Good News seldom gets heard.
Get it straight from the Easter People! God's in charge spread the word!

So tell me..
What is your favorite Easter candy?
Any Easter traditions (God-centered or worldly)?
Do you have a song that just brings back a childhood holiday?

  1. I remember when the Cadbury bunny commercials would be on so often! I always love singing "He Arose!"but especially at Easter time. Actually I think the hymn is actually called "Up From The Grave He Arose". Either way, it's a favorite :)

    1. I am shocked to see those commercials anymore, but did see one last year! And that is a classic hymn, but for some reason I always get stuck on "every morning is Easter morning...".

  2. I like that term, being an Easter person. I am one, too! He is risen indeed!

    That lollipop sculpture is pretty!

    Joyful Easter to you!

    1. I know, the sculpture was the best part of the store in my opinion (the unpopular opinion I bet). You as well!

  3. I've been in Dylan's : ) I feel the same way about people who work in candle shops and Bath and Body Works. The scent would get to me after a while. I love the hymn Teresa mentioned, and would be disappointed not to see it on the bulletin on Easter Sunday morning.

    1. I don't think I could get sick of Bath and Body Works.... but I'm sure I could get sick of a scent. Pumpkin for 4 straight months might drive me insane. And yes, it is a Easter staple!

  5. I love Cadbury Creme Eggs...a little taste of heaven. I give my girls Easter baskets each year. I recall singing, "In Your Easter Bonnet" as a kid...and I still know it by heart!

  6. Fun questions! I have given up sugar and that has been very hard for me, but I am ADDICTED in the worst way. So...this year I will not be consuming any sugar. It has actually been a great thing. I now am running to Christ instead of my sugar desires and that is what Easter is all about.

    1. I admire your resolve! And Easter is all about the candy, sweets and decor in my mind. But that's because I separate it from Resurrection Day, and the week leading up to it.

I love candy to no end, but it is definitely a line that has to be drawn in the sand when it comes to what we crave and desire most :)

  7. This was such a fun read! I love that your parents hid your Easter baskets- brilliantly played for more per-occupied time! lol My husband loves cadbury eggs. I haven't tried them either. No desire really.

    1. I never knew that was a common thing.... I figured that they didn't want to deal with me for an hour so they made that hiding part up. And I've no real love of them. Give me the peanut butter anytime though :)

  8. Farin, if I take my hubby along to the grocery store, my bill is much higher than if I went in with my list. I send him on junkets to retrieve coupon items, and he will come back with at least two things more than required. Enjoyed your comments.

    1. I'm still learning his ways, what strange creatures these men are! I remember my mother sending my father for 2 cans of sweetened condensed milk and him returning with 10 cans of evaporated milk... they were on sale. So, I shouldn't be all that surprised!

  9. I've been to NYC many times but never been to Dylan's! Which is surprising Bc I love candy! I remember when we were kids we used to get really dressed up on Easter. It was the fanciest church holiday for us as Catholics. My sisters and I all wore Easter bonnets or hats plus white gloves, tights, and shiny shoes with our brand new fluffy Easter dresses! I love looking back at those photos!

    1. Dylan's really came up with a really cute concept, and kids love it! I am protestant so while it wasn't fancy for us in the same way my mother did love to sew frilly dresses that I had to keep clean. The photos really do bring it all back right? :)

  10. I think we'd ALL like to lengthen days rather than shorten them! Gosh, the amount of stuff I could get done if the days were six hours longer (but WOULD I get them done is the question)....
Love that there's a place modeled after Willy Wonka's factory. What a magical feeling it must be for kids to walk in there!

    1. Haha. All the adults would lengthen and the children would shorten. I remember when a 5 minute time out was eternity. And I thought it was pretty cool in there, I can't imagine how a little kid would feel :)

  11. Farin,

    I also like Whopper's candy.

One of our Easter traditions, besides coloring eggs, was making Resurrection cookies.
Our guys are grown, however we just stopped a few years ago. I do miss it, tho.

    1. I was shocked that Robin Eggs are considered an Easter candy requirement yet. And I've never heard of resurrection cookies, and just looked them up... what a great use of cookies to teach a lesson :)

  12. Oh wow I adore that sculpture of lollipops! I am a candy addict and always have to force myself to not eat it lol. Easter was one of my favorite holidays for sure...mainly because of the candy lol. I have to go to that store next time I'm in the city! Great post! and yummy too!!

    1. I'm not a lollipop person, but the candy is an unfortunate side effect of the season. Imagine if it was a season of vegetable obsession (or is that summer?) This time of year is dangerous for me as well :)

  13. Oh, my Hubby and your Hubby would do well grocery shopping together. We do not go together. I'm with you, a list, get it and get out!

Enjoyed your answers and wishing you a fun weekend!
