Earth Month, Green Week, and Podcast Addict

1. Have you ever had to wear a uniform? If yes, tell us more. Did you love it or hate it?
Hated them all. Fast food, fast food, front desk at hotel, fast food. I do enjoy dressing up professionally (when I choose to) but love even more being able to come to work in a sweatshirt and jeans.

2. April 22nd is Earth Day. What is one thing you do personally to be a good steward of planet Earth.
I work at a 'green' company, and organize events to help others with the commute and lessen traffic in NYC. April for us is Earth Month, and this week is Green Week- our busiest time of the year, where we help out hundreds of commuters around NYC.
3. Brown rice, quinoa, or couscous...your healthy grain of choice? How often are one of the three on your menu at home? Given a choice between white rice, brown rice, wild rice, and fried rice which would you go for?
Ehh. I'm not into any of the brown options to be honest, and if I had to choose it would be jasmine or white rice.

4. In your opinion, who has the best job ever?
I love the "Stuff You Missed In History Class" and "Stuff Mom Never Told You" podcasts. The hosts of these shows respond to reader mail, and get suggestions on topic to research and share on their twice-weekly shows. You can tell how much fun they have, and I imagine that would be an awesome job. They are also what keeps me awake during my 1.5hour train ride to work, and then again back home. Using PodcastAddict, I download episodes for offline listening.
5. What's a situation in your life currently requiring patience?
Waiting for the next milestone. Today I go in for a sonogram, hopefully to see our (very early) baby. I'm not expecting to see a heartbeat just yet as it is early, but pray that everything else seems to be developing normally.

6. Do you live your life around the days of the week?
Sometimes it feels like it. Monday is the worse because of the backlog of emails and voice-mails to answer at work. Saturday is the most relaxing, meaning that I can sleeping in a bit and wake to a easy morning. Sunday is great because we spend it worshiping corporately with people at church, and host dinner for the family.

7. In a nod to the A to Z challenge happening around town this month, what 'R word' best describes your April?
Realizing that I am pregnant and need to slow down. This month is my craziest month of the year, when everything rushes by and I struggle to keep up. I am trying to realize more and more that I need to eat regularly and sleep more. That I shouldn't necessarily run for the train. And remembering that I can't just grab a cup of coffee, as that used to be my old rescue during Earth Month.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

My new favorite breakfast!

I've always hated using my blender, with the cleaning and all. Plus, I'm sure it still smells of homemade sofrito.

However, last week I read online that you can use an immersion blender in a jar and get the same results.

1 banana
1 cup blueberries
1 cup yogurt
1 cup spinach
2 tsp chia seeds.

So tell me...
Do you have any great kitchen hacks?
Are you addicted to podcasts as well? What ones would you recommend?
Anyone else work in a 'green' industry, and if so, have you gone crazy like me yet?

  1. How neat that you work for a green company! I'm a big green smoothie person too and my go to recipe is very similar to the one you posted! Praying for a good sonogram experience for you!

    1. I'm glad to work in an industry that is going something good, but it makes the first official month of Spring a crazy one. And that smoothie is delicious! I need to do some more research, other fruits that blend well with a immersion blender. Thanks :)

  2. Thanks for the "Stuff You Missed In History Class" podcast suggestion! I am a homeschooling mom and we are always looking for interesting ways to learn our stuff!! So praying for you that everything is healthy with your pregnancy.

    1. They read the listener mail, and the mail starts "my kids and I" or "I play this in my classroom on Fridays" all the time.

I love knowing how these podcasts can help make a lesson more entertaining, or give another way to absorb it.

One thing... if you listen to Sawbones or Stuff Mom Never Told You, screen it. Sawbones has some great stuff (mostly for entertainment value) and Stuff Mom sometimes has some interesting topics.... but they sometimes go on a topic I'd rather avoid. I'm sure you might as well. But they offer a summary and provide a disclaimer so you can judge yourself. Never had an issue with Missed in History though!

  3. I don't know if you'd consider it a kitchen hack, but I roast several trays of vegetables every Sunday and then portion them out into single-serving containers so we can just toss one container with a sausage into a saute pan and come up with a quick breakfast. Since we're on a clean eating regimen, breakfast has been a challenge since I don't really care for eggs.

    1. I am not a cook, and until the day arrives when I can stay at home and we get a regular dining schedule, we eat together with the inlaws during the week. But, we snack. And anytime I forget to prep some baggies of healthy snacks, we go to cereal. I think this might be my new project, thanks for the recommendation :)

  4. I hope your appointment goes smoothly, and baby is doing well. I like a smoothie, just not in place of a meal. I cannot drink my meals, it upsets my stomach, breakfast especially.

    1. Thank you Joyce, it went ok although I may as well have skipped it. Nothing to see yet. And lucky for me I love drinking my meals. I just can't run around afterwards or I'll be sloshing everywhere :)

  5. No kitchen hacks to mention, but thank you for getting those podcasts on my radar, they sound very interesting. Hope all goes well for you today.

    1. Thank you Christina, and I never expected to get so into them. Hope you like them as well :)

  6. So cool that you work for a green company! Ugh, what a long commute, though. Podcasts are awesome for that and I used to listen to them all the time when I drove to and from work. Now that we moved and I can walk everywhere, I don't have that same time available to listen! But I'm going to check out the two you mentioned. A couple of my favorites are Radio Lab, Professor Blastoff and Spilled Milk.
Sending positive energy your way for the sonogram! So exciting. And how did I not know that immersion blender/jar hack?! Thanks!

    1. You just made my day with those podcasts! I just downloaded a bunch to listen to offline, and can't wait to listen to them :) My husband really wants to get a Nutribullet, but I told him we have to get rid of an appliance before we are allowed another :) We only have a 12 inch countertop as is, so this is a great space saver! Thanks Christy!
